5 Tips on How to Choose a Career

Knowing that a lot of teens are confused about what to do after high school or 12th grade, it is no surprise that a lot of people end up in careers that they hate. In some cases, they don’t have much of a choice. In most, however, as long as they have some patience, they do have a choice. Regardless of what the circumstances are, here are a few tips on how to choose your career path:

1. Set Your Goal.

This is the first step in choosing your career path. It all begins with the question “what do I want to be doing when I am 40 years old?”. I understand that it is harder than it sounds but it’s not too hard if you consider it.

This may not seem like a necessary step but you have to know that certain types of jobs require certain personality types. The most general Idea is that Introverts cannot work in a crowded environment. Along with that extroverts cannot work in a quiet environment. The jobs that are ill-suited for introverts are DJ, Event supervising, Cafe chef, etc. Similarly, extroverts are not suited to work in an isolated environment. Jobs that are ill-suited for extroverts are librarians, book reviewers, painter, etc.

To find out what type of personality you are, you can take different online tests. One of the most famous one is the “Myers Briggs personality test”.

3. Revise Your Qualifications, and Skills You Have and Can Master

This is without saying one of the most important things to do for you to choose a career. Know how qualified you are academically and what skills you have. Along with that, also figure out what other skills you can gain and master. This will not only help you in getting the job but also help you in staying in the job.

We all know that getting a job is the easy part. The difficult part is staying in the job. A job is not a career but a career is a long-lasting job. So depending on what skills you have you can search and aim for a job fitting your personality for any field.

4. Know Your Interests

One of the main reasons why people are dissatisfied with their job is because they are doing what they do not want to do. If you are interested in finance but are doing a job related to technology, you will be dissatisfied. You may have the skills and qualifications but you just don’t want to do it. The only reason why you are doing the job is to pay the bills and sooner or later you will get frustrated in this manner.

Your career should be in a job where you can enjoy yourself. Your career should be in a job where you will want to grow. If your job is in the field where you feel bored all the time, you won’t grow and as a result, the pay won’t increase which is not a good choice if you consider the long term effect.

5. Consider Your Salary Needs

This one also one of the main reasons why people are not satisfied with their work. Even if you are in the career of your choice, if it pays less than what you need and desire, you won’t be happy. Similarly, just a high paying career will drain you as well. Find a balance between the job that you want and a job that you need.

It is given that some jobs pay less than other jobs. As long as the job that you want pays you a bit more than you need, you can always grow and the more you grow the more you earn. Just be sure to pick a career where your basic needs are fulfilled and you get to save some.
