Panchakanya refers to a group of five iconic heroines of Hindu epics, Durga, Saraswati, Laxmi, Radha and Annapurna
As mentioned before that Panchakanya refers to the five iconic goddesses of Hinduism and these goddesses symbolize luck and prosperity in Hindu religion. So hoping to cash in the luck and prosperity bought in by these goddesses through sheer hard work and dedication Mr. Prem Bahadur Shrestha started this company in 1970’s when Nepal was still employing license raj of mixed economic system. Despite all this Panchakanya Group is a well known manufacturing and business house with over 10 industries in their name. So let’s know more about them.
The foundation of this group laid with the footsteps of its chairman, Mr Prem Bahadur Shrestha, who invented the idea of trading in potatoes in Fikkal in the hills of eastern Nepal when he was still in his teens. The initial period was a challenging one when Mr Prem Bahadur Shrestha faced major losses in business. Never the one to give up hope, he changed the area of operation and decided to diversify.
Support of Timber and Rice:
Then in 1970s, when the Mr Shrestha decided to diversify his business and moved his base to the plains in Jhapa. This was because he saw more opportunities in here than the hills. Though his initial venture in Terai was in the trade of timber and there were several sawmills in operation back then. Panchakanya Group’s initial industrial venture was the establishment of a modern rice mill, Panchakanya Rice Mill, in 1971, in Jhapa. The decision to establish an agro-based company earned the organization tremendous goodwill in the market. From there he never had to look back.
Entry into Plastics:
In 1981 using the best virgin polymer, Panchakanya started manufacturing HDPE pipes & fittings which complied with international standards. The pipes have been designed for a lifespan of 50 years at 27 0 C and for stress of over 50 kg/cm2.
In 1988 it further added new industry in manufacturing, PANCHAKANYA ROTOMOULDS (P) LTD which produced Unplasticized poly vinylchloride (PVC) pipes, commonly known as rigid PVC pipes.
Taking it even further in 2011 group introduced for the first time in Nepal, CPVC pipes and fittings under Panchakanya Plast Pvt. Ltd. Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC), a thermoplastic produced by chlorination of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin, is readily workable, (including machining, welding, and forming)
Iron and Steels:
After enjoying the success in plastics industries Panchakanya ventured into Iron and Steels which gave the name and reputation that it has now in the hearts and minds of the Nepalese customers. In 1982 it established PANCHAKANYA IRON AND STEEL PVT. LTD. to manufacture CTD and CrT steels, it has gone on to establish itself as a leading steel rebar manufacturer contributing towards the building of safer structures.
Further more in the category of metal industries Panchaknaya established wire industries in 1989, nails and screws industries in 1995, TMT steels in 2002 and in 2013 stainless steel water tank first of its kind in Nepal.
Ventured into Construction and Real Estate:
In 1985 group ventured into the field of construction with TEJ CONSTRUCTION (P) LTD. with highly qualified engineers and skilled manpower, this unit has successfully executed major projects like construction of buildings, highways, and bridges, besides participating in global tenders.
In same category in 1993 group started PANCHAKANYA HOUSING & LAND DEVELOPMENT (P) LTD, PANCHAKANYA READYMIX CONCRETE (P) LTD in 2003, TEJ AGGREGATES (P) LTD in 2010 all in order to contribute in the sector of construction for the development of infrastructure.
Keeping the Environment Safe: Good job!!!
Panchakanya must be the first industry of its kind to think about recycling the non degradable chemicals and materials for keeping the environment safe. In PANCHAKANYA COLD RETREADS (P) LTD. was established which retreads old tyres with rubber processed at a temperature of 100 0 C. This high tech method from Bandag USA is an alternative to new tyres and is 3/4th the cost of new tyres. Good Job!!!
Moving to Carpets:
Carpets is a big industry in Nepal with the exports ranging in billions of rupees for the markets of Europe and North America. In 1992 MECHI EASTERN CARPET I. (P) LTD was established. This industry imports raw wool from New Zealand and Tibet to be put into carding that will be supplied to carpet manufacturing units, thus contributing to a primary export product of the country.
Furniture, Lighting and Profiles:
In 1986 PAKA OVERSEAS (P) LTD was established to import plastic furniture and cold welding material from countries around the world, such as Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, UK, and India.
Concerned with then ongoing load shedding problem in 2008 Explore International was established to lead the cutting edge design and launch smart lighting solution products. The energy-saving and environmentally friendly products are designed in Singapore with emphasis on quality and value to customers.
Established in 2009 PANCHAKANYA PROFILE manufactures uPVC windows and doors that are efficient for thermal insulation, sound reduction, and heat shielding. High quality uPVC windows and doors can transform your home drastically by reducing heat loss, noise, and condensation.
Trading and other Endeavors:
NEPAL BITUMEN AND BARREL UDYOG LIMITED was established by Nepal Oil Corporation Limited in 1984, it was taken over by Panchakanya Group in 1994. The modern barrel plant is capable of producing mild steel containers of different designs, dimensions, and thickness suitable for the packaging of liquid and semiliquid products.
In 1996 PEXIM INTERNATIONAL (P) LTD was established as a trading house to import cement, bitumen, granules, resin, and other similar material from India, Thailand, Germany, and Korea.
In 1999 UJJWAL TRADING CENTER was established to import and distribute chemicals and industrial raw materials as well as building materials including those made by Panchakanya Group’s industries.
Given the popularity of LPG cylinders in Nepalese house holds in 2009 company established NEPAL CYLINDERS (P) LTD. Nepal Cylinder’s LPG cylinders are certified ISO 9001:2008 from ICS. The cylinders carry their complete history: their serial number, gross weight, water capacity, ISE monogram test date, manufacturer identification, and manufacturing year.
Corporate Social Responsibility:
Panchakanya Group has engaged in CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) through is foundation. Previously they have contributed in construction of Panchakanya Goddess Temple and adjoining local road in Fikkal, Ilam, Construction of hospital floor at Bhairahawa,Construction of “Sattal” near Mahadev and Shree Krishna Temple around Akshayswor Mahavir Area,Financial assistance to Lalit Bahamukhi Campus, Pulchowk,Construction of “Sattal” at Hasapota Ganesh Temple in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur.
“Panchakanya Technology Innovation and Research Grant” was established to encourage and support invention and innovation among Nepali scientistsOn the occasion of Panchakanya Day 2067, Panchakanya Group planted trees in 1.5-hectare land situated in Pharping on Bhadra 19. A total of 1200 types of saplings were planted to minimize greenhouse gas emission and help Nepal become environment-friendly. Trees were also planted in Dhobighat, Lalitpur in association with the local Saraswoti Youth Club on Bhadra 15. On the same day, trees were planted around Rupandehi and Parsa Amlekhgunj Area.
