  • Fennel Seeds: 4 teaspoons
  • Cumin Seeds: 4 teaspoons
  • Black Mustard Seeds: 4 Tespoons

  • Garlic: 20 Grams
  • Ginger: 20 Grams
  • Tomato: 100 Grams
  • Coriander Powder: 4 Teaspoons
  • Cumin Powder: 4 Teaspoon
  • Red Chilli Powder: 4 Teaspoon
  • Mustard oil: 4 Table Spoon
  • Onion: 100 Grams
  • Salt: As per your taste

Kwati Recipe: Making Methods:

The recipe for Kwati is really simple. Just like a lot of other soups, all you need to do is gather the ingredients in the right amount and throw them into the mix and add the right amount of spics. For Kwati, you do have to presser cook the beans first though but once this is done, the recipe is rather simple.

Total Time: 39 minutes

Step 1: Add in the Seeds

– Soak the beans overnight
– Drain the water
– Heat some oil the Pressure Cooker
– Add in Cumin seeds, Black Mustard Seeds, Fennel Seeds Lovage Seeds
– Mix well and leave it for 2/3 minutes
– Add the onion-ginger-garlic paste
– Fry for 5 Minutes

Step 2: Add in the Beans

– Add in the beans
– Add Chilli powder, Turmeric, Coriander powder, Salt
– Mix well
– Fry for 5 Minutes
– Add in Chopped Tomatoes
– Cook for 2/3 Minutes
– Add water
– Close the Pressure Cooker
– Cook for 20-30 Minutes

Step 3: Finish and Serve

– Add 2 Cups of Water
– Boil for 5 minutes

Kwati Recipe and Newari People

A lot of you may know that this is one of the traditional foods associated with the Newars or Newari People.

The name of Kwati is made from two Newari Words “Kwa” meaning “warm” and “Ti” meaning “Soup“. “Ti” also has the second meaning of “Give” so the meaning of this dish can also be “give me warmth”.

Kwati is undoubtedly one of the iconic foods of the Newari people. While this dish can be consumed all throughout the year, it is primarily known for being consumed in the Newari Festival of Guni Punhi which is celebrated on the full moon on the month of Guni – the tenth month of Nepal Sambat.

Now while it is traditionally said that there should be 9 beans in the recipe of Kwati, there are some people who disagree.

“We were never told there should be a certain number of beans in Kwati. Among all cuisines in Newar Culture, Kwati is the most self-effacing- people mixed as many beans as they had available in their households or communities” says Prem Hira Tuladhar, A retired professor of Nepal Bhasa at Patan Multiple Campus
