This 2022’s World Leprosy Day – celebrated on last Sunday of January, falls on 30th January. This day is celebrated as a celebration of the people who have experienced leprosy in their life. Established in 1954 by french journalist and activist, Raoul Follereau, it has made it to the year 2022. This year the theme of World Leprosy day is “Unity For Dignity”. 

What is leprosy?

Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by a bacteria called mycobacterium leprae. When a person is infected they suffer from severe, disfiguring skin sores and nerve damage in the arms, legs, and skin area around your bodies. This disease has been around since ancient times.

It has affected people on every continent in the world. It usually takes about 3 to 5 years for symptoms to appear after coming into contact with the bacteria that causes leprosy. Some people do not develop symptoms until 20 years later. Its long incubation period it makes very difficult for doctors to determine when and where a person with leprosy got infected. This disease is also called Hansen’s disease which is named after the scientist who discovered the mycobacterium leprae in 1873.

It isn’t still known how this disease is actually transmitted. It may be transmitted when a person with leprosy coughs or sneezes. It is not transmitted by sexual activity or pregnant mothers with leprosy cant pass it to their children.

There is a very low chance that you might get leprosy but still, you can prevent it by detecting the disease as early as possible and wearing the masks whenever you are with a leprosy person as it can be transmitted from the coughs. Leprosy is a curable disease as it can be treated by the doctors experienced in diseases. It can be treated by taking multiple drugs for leprosy. It takes 6 months to 2 years to cure the disease.
