How to draw an accurate flag of Nepal – as per the constitution of 2015

What is the Most Unique flag in the World?

Of course, it’s the flag of Nepal – the only National Flag in the world that is non-quadrilateral in shape. In simple terms, the only non-squarish Flag in the world.

But did you know that there are certain rules that you have to follow to make this Flag?

If you are making a flag casually, as long as you get the general shape right it’s good. However, if you want to make this flag accurately as per the constitution, then you will have to follow some rules.

Not many people know of these rules even exists – much less how to make one by following them. Do you want to know how to make an official flag of Nepal?  If yes, then get your Geometric goggles on, and let’s look at how do we do it.

Warning – Be ready for a lot of confusion. Regardless of how Simple we make it, if we want to be accurate to the constitution we have to follow the steps and there are a lot of them.

The process of Drawing the Flag Of Nepal

How to draw an accurate flag of Nepal - as per the constitution of 2015

There are four Phases in drawing the Flag of Nepal as per the constitution which are :

  1. The shape,
  2. The Moon,
  3. The Sun,
  4. The border.

Each phase is interrelated to the other and is sequential. If you miss any one of these steps, get ready to scratch your head later on. So we advise you to follow each step and re-check if you have followed every step every now and then.

How are we doing this? As per the constitution!

Is it tedious and confusing? Yes!

Do we have any other options? Well if we want to be accurate to the constitution then Nope

So let’s get started!

Phase 1 – The Shape of the Flag

The first phase is to draw the shape of the Flag. This is the first and the most important phase in drawing the Flag of Nepal and as per the rules, we will be doing a lot of geometry. Be prepared!

  1. Draw a line AB as per your need.

For the sake of convenience/ease, we will be making the line AB e of 12 CM

  1. Draw a line perpendicular to AB and name it AC

The length of AC should be 1 + ⅓ rd of AB

Doing the math:
AB = 12
⅓ rd of AB = 12/3
= 4
Now: 1 + ⅓ rd of AB = 12 + 4
= 16
Therefore AC = 16 CM

3. Mark a point in AC that is the same length as AB i.e 12 CM

4. Join the line DB

5. Take the length of the AB and mark the point E in DB

6. Draw a line which is = AB and perpendicular to AD passing through the point E

7. Name that line FG

8. Join the points CG

By following these 8 steps you will finally get the accurate shape of the Flag. This chapter was for the lines in the Geometry for Flag of Nepal. Now get ready for the Mother of Arcs.

Phase 2 – The moon

If you got confused while drawing the shape of the Nepali Flag then Buckle up. Welcome to the hardest phase of the entire project where you will question your sanity – if you are not a geometry freak. Grab your compass, rules, and let’s start.

  1. Take the 1/4th of AB and mark the point H
In our case,
AH = ¼ of AB
= ¼ x 12
= 3
 Therefore AH = 3 CM

  1. Draw a line from Point H which is perpendicular to AB and Join it to CG
  1. Name the line HI

  1. Bisect CF at J
In our case
CF = 7.5
Half of CF = 7.5/2
= 3.75

This point will be close to the point D but will not be the same

  1. Draw a line from Point J parallel to AB touching line CG at point K
  2. Name the point that crosses HI and JK as L
  3. Join JG
  4. Name the point where JG and HI crosses each other as M

Grab a compass and ready your pencil

  1. Measure the shortest distance from point M to BD using a compass
  2. Mark a point N on the line HI
  3. Draw line on AC parallel to AB that passes through M
  4. Name the point where the line starts on AB as O
  5. Measure LN
  6. Using Center L and LN as a radius draw a semi-circle touching O
  7. Name the points that touch the time Drawn from O as P and Q
  8. Measure MQ and draw an arc from M touching PQ

18. Name the points that touch the ARC PNQ as R and S

19. Draw a line from RS that intersects the line HJ
20. Name that point as T

21. The T as a center and TS as a radius – make an ark on the upper part of arc PN
22. Make 8 equal triangles on the space made by two arc PS

Are you still with us? Yes? Then let us know how you felt after this phase down in the comments below. If you are feeling confused about the complexity of the steps, you can follow our article here to refresh your mind.

Phase 3 – Drawing the Sun

Congratulations Comrade, the hardest battle is over. Welcome to the simpler phase of this project of Making the flag of Nepal as per the Constitution of 2015. If you successfully managed to draw the Moon then this will be a walk in the park for you.

What are the steps you say? So let’s see, shall we?

  1. Bisect the line A and F and mark the point as U
In our case AF = 8.4 CM
Bisecting AF = 8.4/2
= 4.2 CM
  1. Draw a line parallel to AB and mark the point that touches BC as V

3. Mark the point that crosses HI and UV as W

4. Go back to the moon and take MN as a radius

5. Draw a circle using point W as a center

With these simple” steps, we have come near the end of this project. All that needs to be done is the border colors. Let’s finish it quickly.

Phase 4- Border

Since the bulk of this project is complete, all we need to do now is make a border and fill in the colors. Before we move on to the colorful world. Let’s see the steps to finish up the few lines.

  1. Measure TN
In our Case, TN just happens to be 0.5 CM
  1. Mark the length of TN on every side of the flag.
  2. Join the marks to make the borders for the flag of Nepal.
How to draw an accurate flag of Nepal - as per the constitution of 2015

This is the simplest phase in this entire project. All you have to do is mark a few points and draw the lines. Once you finish joining the marks, you will have the constitutionally accurate flag of Nepal. But this is just the outline. If you want to make it come alive, then you will have to fill in the colors.

Phase 5 – Fill in in Official colors

How to draw an accurate flag of Nepal - as per the constitution of 2015

The official colors for the flag of Nepal are Dark Brown Blue, Crimson, and White. Now unless you are someone who is well versed in colors, you won’t know what these are. So if you are not making one for official purposes, then you can fill in any variant of Deep Blue, Crimson, and White. As long as they look close to the official color, then it is good enough.

That being said if you are making this digitally, then it’s a different story. To make this digitally, you might have used any number of software such as:

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Affinity Photo
  • Coral Painter
  • Procreate
  • ArtRage 6

But regardless of where you drew or what tools you used, the color values are the same. What are the color values for the colors? They are:

Dark Brown Blue
Hex code: #003893
RGB code: 0, 56, 147
CMYK code: 1, 0.619, 0, 0.423

Crimson
Hex code: #DC143C
RGB code: 220, 20, 60
CMYK: 0, 0.909. 0.727, 0.137

White
Hex code: #FFFFFF
RGB: 255, 255, 255
CMYK: 0, 0, 0, 0

And Voila we have completed Drawing the Flag of Nepal – as per the constitution of 2015.

Before we Go,

How to draw an accurate flag of Nepal - as per the constitution of 2015

Admittedly this is not an easy process nor a short one. But it is the official one. One thing that you have to note is that we have included a few more steps than in the sources. This is done because some of the steps there are confusing.

Along with this, one has to note that the measurements that we used here are not universal. We only used 12 CM as our base length for AB because it is easily divisible by the ratio required.

The length of AB is not set but since the whole flag of Nepal is based on this line, it is easier to work with an easily divisible number.

Hope you survived till the end and that this was helpful for you. And as always, thank you for reading till the end. If you have any feedback for us, do let us know down in the comments below.
