Let’s start with the know fact at first it was built by the then Prime Minister( Mukhtiyar) Bhimsen Thapa as a show of his capabilities and power. What a way to show off!!
Under the Order of:
It was built under the orders of Queen Lalit Tripura Sundari widowed queen of Late Rana Bahadur Shah who was regent of Nepalese Royal Palace.
There were two! Wait What?!!
Yes guys and girls you heard it right at the beginning there were two Dharharas built by Mukhtiyar General Bhimsen Thapa.
First one:
The first Dharhara was built near Bag Durbar( Bag Mahal) present day office of Kathmandu Municipality which was the residence of Prime minister Mukhtiyar General Bhimsen Thapa
Second One:
The Second Dharhara tower was built as a companion to the first tower under the orders of Queen regent Lalit Tripura Sundari at the current place in Sundhara. What a order!!!
Destruction of the First One: Damn!!
The first Dharhara built by Bhimsen Thapa was destroyed in 1890 BS earthquake and since Thapa was already out of power and out of favor with the King, it was not built back. What a shame!!
Second was Destroyed As Well: Well Almost!!
The Second Tower was destroyed as well in the earthquake of 1990 but was built back. Seriously we should do some thing about these earthquakes!!
Juddha Shumsher builds it back: Well Done Mr. Prime minister!!
Juddha Shumsher Rana who was the then Prime Minister of Nepal in 1990 BS built back the Dharhara to it original shape which stood for another 80 years. A job well done!!!
It was a myth all along: Would have been great though if happened!!!
Contrary to popular belief first Rana Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana never jumped off the 9 storey, 236 ft tall building. He persuaded the mad prince Surendra to postpone the day of jump saving himself. What a clever guy!!!
Used for various purposes:
It was primarily used as military watch tower along with the various purposes like signal station using heliography and bugle sound. The infamous invitation of Kot Masscre was sent through Dharhara by blowing up double bugle sound from the top of it by Jung Bahadur.
