Making a Yomari: 5 Simple and Easy Steps

Yomari is one of The classic Dishes of Newari Culture and there are very few people who haven’t heard of who Yomari is. If you are among those few, it is a type of dumpling filled with either Molasses (Chaku) or Khuwa. It’s a really simple dish that is famous, mostly because of its unique shape and fillings.

A lesser-known fact is that Yomari Means the Bread of Love in the Traditional Newari Language. The term is made from Ya which means “Love” and Mari meaning “Bread” and has a cultural festival which is named after this dish itself called “Yomari Punhi” or Purnima of Yomari.

This ball of sweet deliciousness is one of such dishes and is something a lot of us have eaten and like. However, due to the lack of Newari Friends or the lack of Newari Food Houses nearby, a lot of us have difficulties getting this dish. Well, fear not, as today we have the simple and sweet recipe for making this white dumpling filled with black goodness.

Ingredients for Yomari (Chaku)

Yomari
  • Rice flour: 500 Grams/Half a Kilo
  • Chaku (molasses): 100 Grams
  • Roasted Sesame: 50 Grams
  • Shredded Coconut: 50 Grams

Note* the ingredients here are for a 4 portion or 8 pieces of Yomari with each portion consisting of 2 Yomari

How to make a Yomari

Making a Yomari is not about the ingredients but about patience and time. As you have seen, it doesn’t really require a lot of ingredients. The basic thing to do is, melting the molasses and stuff it inside the dough before steaming it for a sweet ball of deliciousness. While that is being said, nobody can ignore the art part of Yomari as well because of its shape.

Total Time 45 minutes

Step 1: Melt The Molasses

– Chop the Molasses into small bits
– Melt it in a heated pan with shredded coconut and roasted sesame seeds

Step 2: Knead the Dough

Yomari

– Now take some rice flour
– Put in some warm water, and knead to make a dough.
The Dough should not be too soft nor too firm.

Step 3: Make the shape

– After you Knead the Dough, make a cone shape with a hole in the middle.
Be sure to keep the wall around the hole of medium thickness. If the wall is too thin, the Chaku can leak out while steaming.

Step 4: Fill in the Molasses

– Take the molasses off the heat and fill it in the hole.
– Close the hole and make two horns where you closed.

Step 5: Steam and Serve

Yomari

– Put it in a steamer and wait for 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes of steaming your dish will be ready to serve.

You can also make Yomari with Khuwa as well and it is an option in a lot of Newari Food houses. However despite that many people still prefer Chaku Yomari. The reason for this may vary depending on the people.

Regardless, if you like and want to make the Khuwa version, you can just replace the Chaku with the Khuwa. The rest of the process remains the same.

Newari is a weird and wonderful culture with a lot of quirks. Similarly, quite many foods in Newari are weird and wonderful with their own quirk. Along with this, a lot of well-known Newari Dishes are rather simple to make and don’t take much time.

Yomari is one of such dishes that are both simple to make and good in taste. It is one of those few foods in Newari Culture that has a specific day where it is eaten the most. It is the dish eaten during Yomari Punhi and is considered a symbol of Love. The day following Yomari Punhi is Matina Paru which is Valentine’s day for the Newari People and Yomari is shared on this day as a Symbol of Love.
