Will there be a season 3 of The Umbrella Academy?
A first planned movie later turned into a series, The Umbrella Academy is an American Superhero television series created by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater. This series revolves around a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes who come together to solve the mysterious death of their father and the threat of an inevitable apocalypse. The Umbrella Academy is produced by Universal Cable Productions, Dark Horse Entertainment, and Borderline Entertainment.
The Plot Summary
The first season starts off in a universe where 43 women around the world give birth to babies simultaneously at 12pm on 1st October 1989. None of the women were showing any sign of pregnancy until labor began. Among 43 babies, seven children are adopted by a billionaire named Sir Reginald Hargreeves. All the adopted children are born with superpowers and are turned into a superhero team called “The Umbrella Academy”.
All the children except Vanya, played by Elliot page are put together to fight crime. Vanya was kept apart from her siblings’ activities as she had not demonstrated any powers.
The second season takes place right after the first season, where The Umbrella Academy fails to stop the apocalypse. They are now forced to go back in time to save the world. Unfortunately, the time travel goes amiss and the siblings end up in different years in the 1960s. Five, played by Aiden Gallagher discovers that another apocalypse is about to occur and that he has only ten days to prevent it. Along with the apocalypse, there is now a trio of Swedish assassins, who are hunting Five. Five must now find all his siblings and come up with a plan to stop the new apocalypse.
Series Details
The Visual effects for The Umbrella Academy were handled by SpinVFX and Weta Digital. Weta Digital previously worked for the Planet of the Apes and used to develop the visual effects for the character of Pogo.
The Umbrella Academy had received nominations in various categories from 2019. And finally won an award in 2020 on the One-Hour Contemporary single-Camera series.
The Umbrella Academy was well received by the critics. The ratings are given by IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Rating Graph, and Metacritic were also high. IMDB gave the series 8/10 whereas Rotten Tomatoes certified the series fresh by 82%. The Rating Graph gave the series 8.4/10 with Metacritic gave a whooping 63/100.
Business Details
The Umbrella Academy was released on Netflix on 15th February 2019. Within a month it was reported that The Umbrella Academy had been viewed by 45 million households, making it one of the most-streamed series of the year. The same month following the success of the first season, it was renewed for a second season.
The second season was released on 31st July 2020 and received positive reviews from the critics. Following the success of the third season, The Umbrella Academy was again renewed for a third season. Netflix announced that the series had been streamed by over 45 million viewers within the first month of its release. It was the third most popular and most talked-about series on Netflix in 2019.
Ending Thoughts!
I personally loved The Umbrella Academy as it is not like any other classic superhero movie where the only problem is an enemy trying to take over for total dominance of the world. Even though all the major characters possess supernatural abilities, they are less crusading heroes and more like a dysfunctional family. The Umbrella Academy showcases problems that are more likely to occur in a real family, which is why I feel most of the audience connected with the series.
The Umbrella Academy has a total binge watch time of over 18 hours with 53 minutes per season on average. Furthermore, I am now excited to watch the third season of this series where “The Sparrow Academy” is introduced as they mess up their time travel and end up at an alternate timeline.
