The need for human resources in the health sector is at increasing pace because of the COVID 19 pandemic and population growth. The Density of medical doctors (total number of doctors per 1000 population) is 0.65 (2017) in Nepal. The World Health Organization estimates that fewer than 2.3 health workers per 1,000 population would be insufficient to achieve coverage of primary healthcare needs. More than 16 medical colleges in Nepal, are generating Human resources to fulfill the need for health workers in Nepal. Among them, a shortlist of some medical colleges providing the MBBS course is briefly described here.
1. Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS)
Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) is an institution established in collaboration between Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel Hospital. KUSMS launched its own constituent MBBS program in August 2001.
The school has infrastructure and physical facilities at two locations: basic science building with all the required facilities is situated at a hilltop at Chaukot in the Panauti area and the university hospital is situated at Dhulikhel, within a distance of 3 km.
Basic science department has various departments with the required number of laboratories, lecture halls including PBL class rooms, audio visual facilities (media tech.) and library .
2. B.P. Koirala Institute of Health and Sciences
B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) was established on 18th January 1993 with a mandate to develop qualified Health workers for Nation. The Institute was named after the late former Prime Minister of Nepal Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala. This Institute is one of the successful examples of Nepal-India co-operation. The Health Ministers of the two countries (Nepal and India) signed the Indo-Nepal agreement for the establishment of BPKIHS. It is situated at Buddha Road, Dharan, Sunsari.
3. Manipal College of Medical Sciences
Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MCOMS) is a private medical college affiliated to Kathmandu University, located at Pokhara, Nepal. It was established in 1994 because of a historic agreement, signed (18th October 1992) between the-then His Majesty’s Government of Nepal and the Manipal Education and Medical Group for setting up a medical college. This college is recognized by the Sri Lankan Medical Council, British Columbia Student Assistance Program (BCSAP), and the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), Canada, and many others.
4. College of Medical Sciences
College of Medical Sciences is a private medical school, was established in 1993 which is situated in Bharatpur, Chitwan, Nepal. It is a Kathmandu University affiliated college that enrolls around 100 students every year. This college is fully recognized by the Nepal Medical Council, Srilankan Medical Council, General Medical Council of Great Britain (UK) and is enlisted in the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates of USA (ECFMG), WHO’s World Directory of Medical Schools-2000, and also recognized by the Medical Board of California, USA.
5. Patan Academy of Health Science (PAHS)
Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) is an autonomous, nonprofit, public institution of higher education dedicated to improving Nepal’s rural health by training health workers for rural Nepal. It was established in 2008 at Patan, Lalitpur, Nepal. The academy initially consisted of a School of Medicine (SoM), which began to teach prospective doctors in 2010.
At PAHS, community health sciences form 25% of the entire MBBS curriculum to empower the students with skills like strong communication and basic public health tools.
6. Chitwan Medical College
CMC is a private teaching medical college affiliated to Tribhuwan University. It was established on 20th June 2006, at Bharatpur, Nepal. It has also got hospitals with around 750 beds and all kinds of facilities are available for the treatment of patients in this hospital. CMC has received formal recognition from Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Nursing Council, Nepal Health Professional Council, and Nepal Pharmacy Council. this college has facilities like Library, Hostel Canteen, IT Services, Transportation, Extracurricular Activities, Medical Benefit,

7. NAIHS College of Medical Sciences
TCMH (Tri-Chandra Military Hospital) was established in 1925 AD (BS 1982) in honor of Nepalese soldiers who dedicated their life in the First Great War. This hospital was considered as one of the best modern hospitals of that time. TCMH was transformed to SBH (Shree Birendra Hospital) and subsequently to NAIHS. NAIHS is a service-oriented, nonprofit institution affiliated to Tribhuwan University. It is located at Sanobharyang. NAIHS- College of Medicine (COM) offers an MBBS program comprising of 4.5 years of study and a year of internship.
8. Nepal Medical College
Nepal Medical College was established in 1996 at Attarkhel, Jorpati, Kathmandu, is a Kathmandu University affiliated college. The goal of Nepal Medical College is to earn itself the name of international fame by imparting quality education to the learners of medical and health sciences education, develop competent human resources for health who shall provide quality health care services to the people of Nepal in particular, and the people of the “global community” in general. It provides facilities like Library, Vacation, Transportation, Extracurricular Activities, Medical Benefit, and many more.
9. Nepalgunj Medical College (NGMC)
“Nepalgunj Medical College” a Kathmandu University affiliated college was established in 1996 at Nepalgunj, Banke. The college started the MBBS course in 1997, the Nursing program in 2000, and Postgraduate MD/MS in 2007. This college proves the recommendation of the Nepal Medical Council, Medical Council of India, Srilanka, and Medical Councils of SAARC and other countries.
10. Institute of Medicine (IOM)
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University with the responsibility of training all the categories of health manpower needed in the country which is situated at Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. This institute started community-oriented integrated MBBS programs from 1978 with 22 students. Later, the number of students gradually increases. At present, it is the largest institution in Nepal providing health science education and services to the people of Nepal and has enormous potential for growth and expansion in the future.
