Rishi Panchami festival is the concluding day of Teej. Hindu women observe Rishi Panchami from all across the country in Nepal, on the fifth day of the bright full moon in the month of Bhadra. Women gather on the various temple to worship saptarishi on this auspicious day. Both married and unmarried women and girls who have reached their maturation observe this festival.
Why do we celebrate Rishi Panchami?
The maturation period is considered impure. Women and girls are not allowed to cook, participate in religious practice, or come in contact with family members especially males during their period. So fast on this day is especially taken for apologizing for any sorts of mistakes that may have occurred during their menstruation period.
Principle feature and how to celebrate Rishi Panchami?
The principal feature of this day is the ritual bath. Women wake up early on this day before sunrise and take a ritual bath with a particular type of mud. Mud is from the foot of an elephant, the root of Tulasi, and from the roots of Amala. Brushing with the regular toothbrush is not allowed, women have to brush with Datiwan stem which is a herbal plant. Women and girls also have to offer some sorts of leaves to God.
Women and girls make the image of seven saints on rishi Panchami using cow dung and worship them. Seven deities or the saptarishi are Kasyapa, Atri, Bharadvaja, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Vashishta, and Jamadagni.
Evolution in the way of celebrating Rishi Panchami:
The Marsha major constellation which is the north seven brightest Star, The great bear is inhabited by the spirit of these sage.
Fast is strictly observed by women and females. Initially, they only used to consume fruits and roots but nowadays after worshipping they eat rice and curry. This fast is one of the strictest and toughest.
But since nowadays people don’t take the mensuration taboo seriously so, rishi Panchami is not being welcomed as it used to be.
